The sun can be a tattoo’s worst enemy, which is why tattoo sunscreen products are important. Ultra-violet light from the sun can cause the ink in a tattoo to fade, thereby ruining what was once a personalized piece of art. A proper sunscreen can dramatically reduce the likelihood of this happening.
While there are many tattoo sunscreen products that are marketed specifically for tattoos, realistically any sunscreen will do the trick. Most people recommend at least an SPF level of 30 or higher. This is usually sufficient to protect the average tattoo.
Tattoo sunscreen products should not be used on a new tattoo. Until the skin over the tattoo completely heals, sunscreen is not enough to properly protect it from the sun. New tattoos should generally be kept out of direct sunlight for at least the first month or two.
