The term “tattoo needle” actually refers to a grouping of needles (called sharps) that are soldered to a needle bar. The needles come in different sizes and configurations, with each having its own uses and characteristics. The type of needle to use depends on the design of the tattoo itself.
“Rounds” refer to a tattoo needle that has a circular configuration of sharps. Rounds that are made in a tight circle are generally used for drawing lines, while looser circles are used for shading. The basic rule is that the larger the circle, the wider the line produced.
“Flats” refer to a style of tattoo needle in which the sharps are soldered side by side, rather than in a circle. These are commonly used for shading purposes, but can also be used to write in a calligraphy style. Flats can also be used for creating tight corners within a tattoo design.
