Glow in the Dark Tattoo Ink

Tattooing has been around for thousands of years and has evolved a great deal in the last 50. The methods of tattooing before the fast action tattoo machines were developed were painful, time consuming, not very colorful and often caused scarring. It was mostly practiced by sailors, criminals and as a sign of status in many ancient tribes. In recent years tattoos have become popular among a much wider audience, not only appealing to the rough and tumble anarchists and gangsters but also to dainty cream puff women looking for a little snazz.

Many people want tattoos but they are afraid of the stigma that prevails in many people’s minds. A lot of people still look down on tattooing as a criminal adventure that is more appropriate for the prostitute than the librarian but this mind-set is rapidly changing as well. There are ways to hide tattoos from potential employers, suitors, etc, but it’s never fun wearing long sleeves on a hot summer day. Maybe you work at a bank but club every weekend and want to remain professional and cutting edge cool at the same time.

Enter UV ink. Ultraviolet, or UV, ink glows brightly under black lighting conditions that are common at clubs, bars and parties. Certain types of this ink are completely invisible under regular lighting conditions so by day they are not seen but at night, or in a dark room with a black light they glow brighter than anything else in the room. Don’t get UV ink confused with glow in the dark because they are actually quite different.

Glow in the dark tattoo ink has been tried every since glow in the dark paint came out. The unfortunate thing about glow in the dark tattoo ink is that it is not safe at all. Do not buy or allow it to be put under your skin. It contains phosphors which have to be treated with radiation to get them to absorb sunlight and glow in the dark. Phosphors alone cause cancer and radiation is much worse. Putting them under your skin is dangerous, illegal, and really stupid. Good luck trying to find an artist that will tattoo with this kind of ink. Luckily this kind of ink is almost impossible to find, especially in the US.

Alright, back to UV ink. Although it is safe and has no links to cancer and other ailments it is still a young product that has not been thoroughly tested. UV tattoos have only been around for about 10 years so the long term health effects are not fully known although most people who have them don’t report any adverse feelings. For some people though the UV ink is highly irritant causing the tattoo to never feel like it has healed and being painful to touch. Often the only solution is laser tattoo removal which is much more expensive than the already expensive tattoo. It is a good idea to start with a small UV tattoo and only after it heals and feels great should a larger one be attempted. Once completed however, they are some of the most beautiful and interesting tattoos around.
