Cheap Tattoo Ink

Tattoo ink is the life-blood of every tattoo artist and enthusiast. It is the actual color that gets impregnated into the skin in designs that can be both beautiful and wretched, but will always last forever. The application of the ink and the right mixture of that ink are what produces a tattoo that will be loved and last forever. A poorly applied ink or a mixture that is clumpy can greatly lower the quality and everlasting effect that tattoo aficionados embrace.

Tattoo ink consists of a pigment and a carrier. Typically it is not ink at all, but closely resembles its consistency. It is actually much closer to traditional paint than writing ink. One exception is India ink which consists of black carbon from charcoal and water. This cheap tattoo ink has been used to tattoo for hundreds if not thousands of years and is still used today. If you are thinking of applying a jail house tat this is the stuff to use as it is safe and easy to find, although the application methods could be better.

Tattoo ink can be found pre-mixed or it can be mixed by the artist themselves. Predispersed pigments can be readily found online and at tattoo shops although the companies that produce them are not required to list their ingredients even if they are toxic. This doesn’t mean that all predispersed tattoo ink is harmful, many ink producers use natural ingredients that are not toxic or allergenic. These can be as safe, or safer than a mixed ink. It is important to research the company before buying any ink, one of the best resources is experienced tattoo artists although many are wary to share their secrets.

A tattoo artist who mixes their own ink has a wide range of options for both pigment and carrier. This is one of the easiest ways to make cheap tattoo ink and can also be one of the safest. The artist knows exactly what is going into the ink and although many keep their mixtures secret they can be pressured to disclose the ingredients. Most pigments are made from metal salts, plastics, and vegetable dyes. Typically they are all safe but some people get allergic reactions from different pigments, especially plastic ones. People with sensitive skin are the most susceptible to this. Cinnabar and cadmium pigments, found in red colors, should be avoided because they are highly toxic.

The carrier dissolves the pigment to make it easily workable while also keeping it sterile and sanitized.  The safest and most commonly used ingredients are ethyl alcohol, distilled water, witch hazel, Listerine, propylene glycol, and glycerin. Fluids to avoid are denatured alcohols, rubbing alcohol, ethylene glycol (anti-freeze), formaldehyde, surfactants and detergents. These are listed because some tattoo artists use these in their mixtures and all of them are highly toxic and can find their way into cheap tattoo ink.
