Black Tattoo Ink

Black tattoo ink is the modern default color. For a long time black was the primary color used in tattooing. Modern tattooing is based on the same concepts that ancients have been using for millennia. In fact, there is evidence to show that tattooing has been a social practice since Neolithic times. This ancient background is supported by a variety of evidence.

The original ink was actually a very dark brown, rather than the default black tattoo ink we use today. The pre-historic origins are supported by evidence of tattooing in almost every ancient culture; from the Chinese to the Egyptians. While the form the tattoos took in various cultures varied, the procedure was almost identical.

The procedure involved inserting an ink derived from plant extracts, and oftentimes vinegar under the outer layers of skin. It was done with the help of a hollow needle. The plant extracts used resulted in a brown ink that approached the black tattoo ink we use today but never quite got there. The needle was made from items indigenous to the area. In arid desert areas, the needles were taken from cacti or the hollow bones of birds. In more forested areas, and in the tropics, needles were made from the hollowed out tusks of boars.
